In a traditional spaying procedure, a 5 to 10-cm incision is made in the abdomen, through which the ovarian ligament is blindly torn from the abdominal wall. This tearing can lead to bruising on your pet’s abdominal wall and postoperative pain. In most cases, your pet is required to stay overnight, and the incision can take up to two weeks to heal, with a risk of infection or the potential for her to tear open the stitches.
However, we offer an innovative and minimally invasive approach known as laparoscopic spaying. This technique involves making one to three small incisions in the abdomen, ranging from 0.32 to 1.27 cm in length, depending on the size of your pet. A laparoscope (camera) provides a magnified view of the internal structures of the abdomen on a TV monitor, allowing for greater surgical precision and reducing the risk of complications. Instead of blindly tearing the ovarian ligament, as in a traditional spay, the magnified view enables our skilled veterinarians to carefully cut and cauterize it, eliminating the pain your pet would experience from bruising.
One of the key benefits of laparoscopic spaying is the reduced trauma your dog or cat experiences during the procedure. Additionally, the smaller incisions are sutured, and most pets can be sent home on the same day of the surgery. With a laparoscopic spay, your pet will experience significantly less post-operative pain, up to a remarkable 65% less compared to traditional spaying methods.
For larger breed, deep-chested dogs, we also offer the option of gastropexy during the laparoscopic spaying procedure to prevent life-threatening conditions such as gastric torsion (bloat).
Here’s a summary of the advantages of Laparoscopic Spaying:
- Smaller incisions (1 – 3 tiny holes)
- Reduced pain due to precise surgical cuts
- Up to 65% less post-operative pain
- Minimally invasive technique reduces the chance of infection
- Outpatient surgery allows your pet to recover in the comfort of your home
